There is no doubt that a wheel upgrade is one of most significant ways to change the way your bike rides and responds. Variations in materials, rotational weight, aerodynamics, even hub points of engagement will all impact your ride. There is no component that we recommend more highly to customers wanting to take their bike up to the next level. From acceleration, rolling speed, through cornering and into braking, wheels can totally change your perspective on the way a frame feels and rides. Not sure if an upgrade is right for you, or what type of wheels are right for your budget, come in and talk to us. We also have this article posted on our site to help you decide what type of rider you are and what type of wheel might be right for you. We carry wheels from the following brands, but have access to many others as well.
- ENVE Composites: Known previously as EDGE, ENVE has commited itself to the serious small market approach to carbon fiber excellence. Wheels have become their signature component. With carbon fiber construction expertise and a passion for cycling, the ENVE crew have built amazing rims for mountain and road, in both tubular and clincher iterations.
- Mavic: In the first half of the last decade, Mavic totally changed the way the industry and riders looked at wheels. New designs were developed as systems, with specific integration between component pieces. The result- great wheels, with great characteristics and eye-catching appearance. We take this for granted now, but it wasn’t long ago these were exotic. Still innovating, refining, and delivering, Mavic’s full range of wheels available through Veloce Velo.
- ZIPP: Just as Mavic turned system wheels into the norm, ZIPP proved that aerodynamics have value to the elite cyclists and triathletes, as well as cycling enthusiasts everywhere. The new Firecrest rim technology has delivered terrific aerodynamics, durability and ease of use to the carbon clincher market. The proven aerodynamic performance of ZIPP’s wheels, and their desire to constantly improve them, keep ZIPP at the head of the classification, with everyone else working hard to just get into the draft behind them.
- Shimano: Over engineering isn’t always the answer. Shimano has learned this with wheels. Shimano believes deeply in loose ball angular contact bearings for their hubs. Incredibly durable, easy to service, and extremely smooth under both vertical and diagonal loads, angular contact bearings keep the wheel tracking cleanly without sideloading the bearing. After brief flirtations with paired spoke designs, Shimano has also come back towards more traditionally laced wheels. Durable, competitively weighted, and excellent performance- all Shimano priniciples.
- Campagnolo: Tradition. The one word that defines Campy probably is least exemplified by their wheels. However, the second word that best defines Campy is performance, and when performance goals need to be met, innovation comes to the fore. Campy’s wheels most closely resemble Mavic designs, but at the core of the wheel is the hub, and Campy’s hub internals still lead the pack. Smooth, buttery bearings and quick, light and reliable freehubs, combined with integrated spoke and rim designs keep Campagnolo’s tradition of performance alive.
-Handbuilt: Here at Veloce Velo, we have several very experienced staff members who will be happy to discuss the options and benefits of handbuilt, traditionally laced wheels. Our Service Manager is a terrific builder who enjoys the process and takes pride in his work. We have access to hubs from Shimano, Chris King, Campagnolo, White Industries, DT Swiss, and many others. Rims from Mavic, DT Swiss, and Velocity are widely available. Come in and talk with us about your needs and options.
