Continental

Continental, founded in 1871 in Germany, has long been one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of tires for automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles. Unlike other major tire manufacturers where the bicycle market seems like an afterthought with only a few models, Continental has an incredibly well thought out bicycle tire line. The vast majority of their tires are made in Germany in Continental-owned factories, which (believe it or not) is also against the current trend in the industry.

You’ll find one of the largest selection of Continental Tires at Veloce Velo, and we’ll gladly work with you to help you find the right Continental tire.

Continental Technologies

Carbon black is commonly used in the manufacture of tires for both reinforcement and coloration. Continental’s Black Chili compound is carbon black ground to an ultra-fine level which translates into more rubber on the ground, more flexibility, and improved elasticity. How fine is ultra-fine? If normal carbon black particles were the size of the Earth, Black Chili particles would be the size of a soccer ball.

All the science aside, Black Chili provides:
- 30% increased road adhesion for superior handling,
- 26% lower rolling resistance for a quicker, smoother ride, and
- 5% improved mileage (versus Conti’s already long-lasting tires, not just the industry average)

The Vectran breaker is a layer of polymer fabric placed under the tread for ultimate puncture protection without sacrificing ride quality. Vectran is incredibly durable (five times stronger than steel) and is also lighter and more flexible than the nylon breakers that are commonly used in other companies’ “armored” tires.

PolyX is a polyester breaker, adapted for bicycle use after being successfully used in Continental’s automotive tires for years. The fabric is woven into an overlapped pattern that provides excellent puncture protection with a high level of flexibility for a smoother ride.

Because it’s not only the tread that needs protection, Continental developed the Duraskin polyamide fabric layer that lies in between the outer tread and inner casing. Adding only 10 grams of weight, the Duraskin protects the sidewalls from unexpected surprises.

High-Performance Clinchers (Grand Prix Series)

Grand Prix 4000

The 23mm wide Grand Prix 4000 is our number one selling tire for good reason – it has amazing performance without compromising durability or longevity. These tires attack corners with a very secure grip, handle wet weather conditions without feeling slippery, and roll smoothly and comfortably over long distances. We’ve had customers who get two to three times the mileage out of these tires than their previous high-end tires, and they also look notably better after a few thousand miles than other tires in this category that show wear very quickly.

The GP 4000 has a Black Chili tread with a Vectran breaker. The S version is the same tire, but with a more aggressive sidewall graphic (S stands for “schwarz”, which is German for “black”).

Also available in metallic silver, metallic blue, blue, red, and yellow colors, please note that these colored tires don’t feature the Black Chili material.

Pricing
GP 4000 – $65
GP 4000S – $65

Attack/Force

More than simply a matched pair of GP4000 tires, the front-specific 22mm Attack and rear-specific 24mm Force have different rubber formulations to add grip to the front tire and strength to the rear tire. They also have directional-specific tread patterns, all of this adding up to make these the ultimate in performance from Continental.

The Attack/Force comes in a special two-tire pack or are also available separately. They have the Black Chili compound in the treads and have Vectran breakers.

Pricing
Attack/Force Combo (two tires) – $125
Attack (Front) – $65
Force (Rear) – $65

Grand Prix 24

If your riding style is more about ultimate comfort and less about ultimate performance, the Grand Prix 24 is a tire you should definitely consider. The two main differences are the 24mm width (just slightly wider than the GP4000) and the smoother PolyX breaker.

Pricing
GP 24 – $55

Grand Prix Triathlon & SuperSonic

Continental also provides two Grand Prix options with slick treads. The Triathlon model is available for 700c and 650c wheels in a 23mm width, and has Black Chili and a Vectran Breaker (yes, they will survive volcano ash).

The SuperSonic is all about ultralight race performance and sacrifices durability for weight. It does have the Black Chili for superb road hold/grip, but there is no breaker to resist punctures. It comes in 20mm and 23mm widths.

Pricing
GP Triathlon – $65
GP SuperSonic – $65

Grand Prix 4-Season

Last but definitely not least in this category is the GP 4-Season. This is the undisputed King of the ultra-durable tires. Unlike other bombproof tires that have truly abysmal ride quality, these tires are excellent performers. When you want a tire you can use all year round without compromise, look no further than the GP 4-Season.

Pricing
GP 4-Season – $70

Entry-Level Clinchers (Ultra Series)

Ultra Race

The top of the line fron Continental’s Ultra series is surprisingly close to the quality of the Grand Prix series, but at nearly half the price. The Ultra Race has the Safety System breaker for flat protection, innovation that comes from Continental’s City/Urban line.

Wire bead tires can’t be folded into a pocket or pack, and weigh a little more than their foldable counterparts.

Pricing
Ultra Race wire bead – $35
Ultra Race foldable – $45

Ultra Sport

The Ultra Sport is the perfect tire for the casual enthusiast. A low cost matched with the Continental ride quality makes a great combination.

Wire bead tires can’t be folded into a pocket or pack, and weigh a little more than their foldable counterparts.

Pricing
Ultra Sport wire bead – $25
Ultra Sport foldable – $35

Ultra Gatorskin

If you want an all-season tire but don’t want to splurge for the luxury of the Grand Prix 4-Season (our absolute favorite “rugged” tire) then the Ultra Gatorskin is a great choice. It has the Continental ride quality and quite a lot of durability built in through the Duraskin fiber layer, and is priced competitively with the lower quality all-season tires on the market.

Wire bead tires can’t be folded into a pocket or pack, and weigh a little more than their foldable counterparts.

Pricing
Ultra Gatorskin wire bead – $45
Ultra Gatorskin foldable – $55

Ultra Sport Hometrainer

Thanks to its special cold-running compound, the Ultra Sport Hometrainer doesn´t experience the heat buildup of a road tire, nor does it suffer the tread separation that the road tire is prone to under the special loads occurring when in cycling and braking on the roller´s revolving drums. The Ultra Sport Hometrainer has been designed explicity for rollers and is not suitable for on road use.

Pricing
Ultra Sport Home Trainer – $45

Tubulars

Competition

Much as the Grand Prix 4000 dominates the enthusiast cycling market, the Competition tubular dominates the Pro Tour. Hand sewn in very small quantities in Germany, the Competition is light and nimble, uses Black Chili for intense grip, and has a Vectran layer sewn in for added puncture protection. Even the Italian wheel builders will admit this is the best tubular available today – just not in public.

Available in 26″ x 19mm, 26″ x 22mm, 28″ x 19mm, 28″ x 22mm, and 28″ x 25mm configurations.

Pricing
Competition – $105

Grand Prix 4000

The Grand Prix 4000 has four plies instead of the three in the Competition and is 10g heavier. Both share the Vectran breaker and Black Chili compound formulation. The tread is the dynamic siping that the GP4000 is famous for instead of the light crosshatch pattern of the Competition. Equal in as many ways as it is different from the vaunted Competition, it’s really up to you which flavor of “the best” you want to glue on your rims.

The Grand Prix 4000 tubular is available in 28″ x 22mm.

Pricing
GP 4000 – $110

Sprinter/Sprinter Gatorskin

The Sprinter is the criterium specialist. Light, rolls smoothly, and corners incredibly aggressively. Choose the Gatorskin version if you’re going to be on a rough course for added sidewall protection.

Pricing
Sprinter – $65
Sprinter Gatorskin – $70

Podium

The podium has one singular goal – to get you over the finish line in your time trial as fast as possible. Light all-round performer with Black Chili grip, this is one fast race-day tire!

Pricing
Podium – $80

Giro

Continental’s excellent training tubular, no-frills pricing thanks to some clever outsourcing (one of the very few partner-sourced tires).

Pricing
Giro – $35
