Cannondale

In 1971 Cannondale was founded in rural Connecticut. Getting their start in bicycle touring accessories, they quickly moved into frame manufacturing with a specialty in aluminum. Most of us can remember the first time we saw one of the old Cannondale bikes with oversized tubing. Although there were people who thought they looked odd, one thing was a certainty: anyone riding one was in love with their bike.

Although Cannondale is a relatively new brand for us, for years many of our best customers have asked us to consider picking up the line. Cannondale bikes inspire a loyalty that very few brands have today, and we’re always hearing stories about their phenomenal customer service going above and beyond, the Cannondale that refused to die even after tens of thousands of miles, or the first bike someone owned that just felt like “magic”.

At Veloce Velo we tend to favor design and passion over trendy fads and marketing, and Cannondale fits right into that pattern. If you look back at a lot of the technologies that have found their way into the mass market, Cannondale can be seen at the forefront by at least a year or two. Computer Assisted Design – Cannondale was a pioneer. Vertical compliance from carbon tube shaping – Cannondale led the way. The oversized BB30 bottom bracket design was a Cannondale innovation. Awards for innovative design have been both regular and frequent over the past thirty years, from Popular Mechanics, Bicycling, Business Week, Design News, VeloNews, and dozens of other publications and journals.

In addition to the trade press, Cannondale also have one of the most prestigious records on the real-world proving grounds of the pro circuit. World Championships, Olympic Golds, numerous stages in the Grand Tours and Spring Classics, and more recently multiple victories in the Giro D’Italia. The Liquigas-Cannondale team are regularly photographed with additional weight strapped and taped onto their bikes to pull their bikes up to the legal weight minimum – once again Cannondale is leading the charge towards lighter high performance machines. When you see Ivan Basso and Vincenzo Nibali rocketing down a mountain in the Alps at speeds over 60 mph you know there’s more to these bikes than meets the eye.

SuperSix

The SuperSix is the direct descendant from last year’s Pro Tour frame that won the Giro D’Italia and the Vuelta a Espana. One look at its oversized tubing and you can see that this is a bike that is all about stiffness and power transfer where it counts. Cannondale was the pioneering force behind the BB30 bottom bracket technology, and the massive BeatBox area around the SuperSix cranks provides power transfer at levels that rival bikes we sell in the $5,000+ range. The oversized headtube brings a rock-solid steering feel, and the hourglass seat stays keeps this bike tracking with stability through all conditions. With one ride on the SuperSix, Cannondale will show you that their difference is in the quality of their design, and that there’s a lot more to building a great carbon fiber bike than making it stiff.

Of special note in this lineup is the SuperSix equipped with the brand new Shimano Ultegra Di2. This is the first bicycle that we have been able to offer in this price range with electronic shifting. Once it is set up by our mechanics it won’t need adjusting for at least a few years and you will have PERFECT shifting practically forever. The Di2 system will automatically trim the front and rear derailleurs for you, eliminating all mis-shifts and providing beautifully quiet and reliable cycling experience. The battery in the first-generation Di2 systems would last for over a year of heavy riding between charges, and Shimano says that battery life has been improved even further in this generation.

On the other end of the line is the new SRAM Apex groupset, amazing for its ability to provide the shifting range of a triple chainring but with the weight savings, simplicity in shifting, and reliability of the double.

SuperSix EVO

The new SuperSix EVO series represents the ultimate Cannondale experience. These are the bikes that the Pro Tour Team Liquigas use, and with the addition of the EVO Ultimate they can even go beyond what the pros can use. Stiff, light, responsive, absolutely world class in every way, but also remarkably comfortable and versatile. It is highly maneuverable at lower speeds, and it glides effortlessly when you take it up to very high speeds. It attacks corners and hills with energy and life, and gives you instant feedback when you stand up and push it hard.

The EVO, as you might guess, stands for the evolution of the SuperSix platform. The design of every tube has been carefully examined and optimized, and refined with purpose. A slimmer profile overall is met with radical shaping in the rear triangle to both reduce weight and improve responsiveness. Most importantly, it all works incredibly well as a cohesive package and rides with balance.

We believe very strongly that the EVO is head and shoulders above its competition in three key ways:

1. Performance
The EVO has a life to it that is usually only found in the best of the European framesets. Other manufacturers have focused on stiffness or aerodynamics at the expense of ride quality, and the EVO stays true to its principles as an all-round excellent bike that doesn’t make compromises. The EVO is not only a great performer, it is just plain more enjoyable to ride.

2. Component Specification
It has become commonplace in the industry to “downgrade” components in places that you wouldn’t notice on the sales floor, but they tend to add up to annoyances once you get the bike on the road. The EVO breaks that trend too, with even the “entry level” EVO Red coming equipped with SwissStop brake pads, Fizik saddle and bar tape, and Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels. Inspect the EVO closely and you will see that Cannondale is not cutting corners on their build kits.

3. Price
Even taking the above two points into consideration, the EVO is priced incredibly competitively with its peers. We don’t think you’ll find a bike in this class with a better price.

We encourage you to compare the options for yourself, and we are also confident that the EVO will win your heart as it has won ours.

The EVO frameset is exactly the same throughout the range, and only the component specification differs. We also offer a number of upgrades on the EVO series to tailor these bikes to your preferences, from wheelset to saddles. Please contact us to discuss building one to your exact requirements.

Performance Road – Synapse Series

The Synapse range is all about comfort without sacrificing performance. We don’t like using the word “plush” because that would group these bikes in with a lot of boring options that a growing number of riders are replacing after a few years of not being inspired or excited to ride. The Synapse has won dozens of awards around the world in “overall/all-round bike” categories because it’s so versatile.

Synapse Carbon

These four bikes are the magic in the Cannondale lineup, and are the ones that constantly win awards from the cycling press. Perfectly balanced for the enthusiast rider, once you ride one the other bikes in this category seem dull and lifeless.

Cannondale uses their SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) technology in three key areas to make these bikes comfortable without being dull. SAVE PLUS technologies used in the Synapse line are focused on smoothing out the ride, while SPEED SAVE is used in the SuperSix to maximize performance.

1. SAVE PLUS Rear Triangle
Carbon fiber isn’t just used by frame designers for weight savings. The ability to use advanced tube shaping to tune the ride characteristics is arguably becoming the primary reason that carbon bikes ride are preferred over their metal counterparts. The SAVE PLUS rear triangle is the perfect example of this, using flattened tubes in the rear structures to absorb vibrations coming from rough roads but not at the price of deadening the road feel.

2. SAVE PLUS Seatpost
Another great Cannondale design is in the ride-adjustable seatpost found on every carbon Synapse model. A second shaft is available (at marginal additional cost) to tune between firm and soft ride qualities depending on your needs that day.

3. SAVE PLUS Fork
The Synapse fork just screams “smoooooth”. The multi-directional carbon layup and clean lines are not only striking to look at, they are also highly functional and are the icing on cake for the Synapse’s dynamic road feel.
